KH400 CDI Test Procedure by Dayle Edwards (Starfire)

This is the test procedure for the KH400 series of CDI units:

1 remove the CDI unit and battery from bike
2 Connect CDI unit as follows.... crocodile clip leads are useful for this.
3 Temporarily touch the BLUE and ORANGE and GREEN wire to the BLACK/WHITE wire to remove any dangerous voltages
4 Connect the RED wire from the unit to one lead of a low wattage 12 volt test light
5 Connect the other test light lead to Battery + (positive)
6 Connect the BLACK wire to Battery - (negative)
7 The test light should be off
If the test light glows , one SCR is shorted, the unit is faulty.

The next sequence tests the CENTER cylinder

8 Touch the BLUE/WHITE wire to the RED wire
9 The test light should come on, and stay on when the BLUE/WHITE wire is removed
IF the light does not come on, the SCR is open, the unit is faulty
10 Disconnect the RED wire to the test light and reconnect it again to the same place
The test light should once again be off

The next sequence tests the RIGHT cylinder

11 Touch the GREEN/WHITE wire to the RED wire
12 The test light should come on, and stay on when the GREEN/WHITE wire is removed
IF the light does not come on, the SCR is open, the unit is faulty
13 Disconnect the RED wire to the test light and reconnect it again to the same place
The test light should once again be off

The next sequence tests the LEFT cylinder

14 Touch the RED/WHITE wire to the RED wire
15 The test light should come on, and stay on when the RED/WHITE wire is removed
IF the light does not come on, the SCR is open, the unit is faulty
16 Disconnect the RED wire to the test light and reconnect it again to the same place
The test light should once again be off
17 Touch the GREEN, RED, and BLUE wires to Battery - (negative)
If the Test Light comes on, one the discharge capacitors is shorted, the unit is faulty. In in some instances this can be remedied with a work around. Contact me.
18 Remove all connections to unit
19 Connect the BLACK/WHITE wire to Battery + (positive)
20 connect one lead of test light to RED
21 connect other test light lead to battery - (negative)
Light should be off.
If light comes on, isolating diode is shorted, unit is faulty.
